Sleep Training

What is sleep training?

Sleep training is a method of helping babies/toddlers to learn to fall asleep on their own.  Some babies do this early on naturally, but many have trouble falling asleep or getting back to sleep without assistance. There are a few different methods used depending on parenting style and baby’s personality.

When can I start sleep training?

Many sleep consultants recommend sleep training begin between 4-6 months of age. Around 5-6 months is when most babies have developed a regular sleep pattern, have begun to naturally drop many of their night feedings, and are starting to show signs of the developmental skill of self-soothing.  These are all signs that the baby may be ready to begin sleep training. Every baby is different and we can help you decide if sleep training is right for you and your baby based on their age, development, temperament, sleep goals, and parenting philosophy.

If your baby is under 5 months, you may be interested in a 30 or 60-minute consultation to talk about newborn sleep and how to work on setting up healthy sleep habits. We also offer in-home overnight newborn care with one of our nighttime postpartum doulas to work on healthy sleep habits with the baby, while you get some much-needed rest.  More information is here.

There are many methods to sleep train.  While many traditional methods have some level of tears (they are a natural reaction to change), there are methods that are slower, gentler that involve fewer tears.  All our methods include parental support throughout the process. The degree to which you want to support is up to you!

We do offer customized plans that are designed for low to no tears to support those parents with an attachment parenting philosophy, bed share, and/or have higher needs babies/toddlers. We will work with your family to find the best method for you and your child.

The answer is no!  As a certified lactation counselor, our certified pediatric sleep consultant is passionate about keeping nursing sessions if that is what the family desires.  Sleep training does not mean you cannot nurse at night.  We will focus on how many feeds you’d like to keep, what times make the most sense for you and baby, and have a plan to wean when you are ready.

Parenting babies and toddlers how to sleep doesn’t mean you have to stop nursing! These are two completely different things.

We have you covered!  We offer 30 & 60-minute phone or Zoom consults to answer all your sleep questions!

Common questions are:

  • Based on age, how many naps should my baby have?
  • How do I know if it’s time to drop a nap?
  • What does sleep look like, based on age?
  • How can I start to wean at night?
  • Why is my baby taking short naps?
  • Suddenly, my baby isn’t sleeping well.  What can I do?
  • How do I get my baby back on schedule after an illness, teaching, travel, etc?
  • My toddler is out of the crib and won’t stay in bed. What do I do?
  • How do I flip nights and days?
  • How do I gently get my child from my bed to theirs?

We offer support to families with newborns through age 3.  Support before 16 weeks, is working with parents on education of newborn sleep, creating schedules, and healthy sleep environments through our phone/Zoom consults.  From 16 weeks through age 3, we can provide not only phone/zoom consulting support but also sleep consulting packages to get your child falling asleep on their own.

As a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, our Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant is able to offer customized sleep plans and support to meet each unique family’s needs that address all aspects of the child and family such as:

  • Age
  • Temperament
  • Overall health
  • Developmental skills
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Nutritional needs
  • Parental philosophy
  • Childcare setting
  • Appropriate schedules
  • Sleep goals

Once we discuss all the factors involved, our sleep consultant will design a sleep plan specifically for you.  We do not use one specific method to sleep train. We believe each child and family has specific needs that need to be addressed in each plan. You will not find a “one size fits all” method or plan with our sleep training services.

We frequently work with families that identify as attachment parents!
